Medical Cannabis Family, Nurse Discuss CBD’s Therapeutic Benefits at the 4th Annual Cannabis World Congress and Business Expo in New York
Harper Howard’s family never saw her smile until age 3, when they administered hemp oil to treat the life-threatening genetic disorder CDKL5 epilepsy. Harper’s mother and sister, Penny Howard and nine-year-old Lily Howard, discussed Harper’s transformation on the Cannabis Talk 101 show at the 4th Annual Cannabis World Congress and Business Exposition in New York, June 14-16.
Lily Howard, making history as one of the youngest guests to ever appear on Cannabis Talk 101, said “My sister Harper was born when I was 2. She didn’t exist then – she was a part of the family but she wasn’t there . . . I would have to play with her doll and mine. When Harper started taking hemp, she could move around and do more stuff than she could before.”
After 5-year-old Harper passed away January 8, 2016, Lily began to have physical symptoms of anxiety. “I got very nervous with bad weather and picked my fingers,” she said. Lily also had staph infections from eczema. She now takes hemp oil every night and said it has helped.
Penny Howard said she and her husband discovered CBD oil after they saw Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s CNN special “Weed” in 2013 and began to search for alternative medicine for Harper. “We did research and found industrial hemp from HempMeds®, Real Scientific Hemp Oil (RSHO) ™,” she said. “Within the first three days, her seizures were cut in half. She started to be more verbal.”
Penny Harper said, “[CBD oil] comes from industrial hemp. . . Hemp is its own plant used to make paper, rope and things like that. There would be no reason to take it recreationally, but there is medicinal value. It’s legal in all 50 states and over 40 countries.” Penny said she considers hemp a dietary supplement and that the only risk in giving to to Harper was that it might not work. “Doctors were very supportive of my decision,” she said.
Penny said the family included Harper in everything, but “We didn’t know how she felt about anything. We never saw her smile until we gave her hemp . . . She was interacting with the family and coming to life.”
Former emergency room nurse Gina Caracciolo joined the Howards on the show to discuss her experience with patient Beyla Pagano, another child who was able to rejoin her family life after using hemp oil. Beyla was born with hydrocephalus, a condition that causes excessive fluid in the brain. Caracciolo was the lead emergency room nurse at the hospital when Beyla was rushed in with her father, Craig Pagano.
Caracciolo told Cannabis Talk 101, “It brought her back to life . . . She was having adverse reactions and so she was able to come off most of her medications and take hemp CBD.”
“The RSHO significantly diminished the amount of seizures she was having each day,” Caracciolo said.
Cannabis Talk 101 host Christopher Wright “Blue” told Lily Howard, “I think you should continue sharing your story forever. It’s beautiful to keep your sister alive by talking about her . . . I think it’s going to help a lot of other children.”
